Hey Beta Folks

Now it's been some time since we've seen any new features come into beta, so I'm happy to announce that today we have a couple of little additions involving thumbnails for everyone to try out :eager:

Comments Count on Thumbnails

We love to encourage users to leave feedback on art they like, as it's always nice to see users appreciating each-others work.

Now we've made it even easier for you to spot that wonderful masterpiece
so that you can give it the attention it deserves

Under deviation thumbs in gallery, favourites and when browsing the site you will see the comments count for the deviation

Galleries at a Glance

On the subject of thumbnails we've also added some info informing you which galleries the deviation is in

So now thumbs really give you more details at your fingertips  </badpun>

More to Come!

If these new features have wet your appetite for more then don't despair!
We'll have even more exciting features coming your way soon, for both dA muro and the rest of deviantART :la:

Tell Us what You Think

We want to know your opinion on these new features, so go and give them a try by going to the deviantART Homepage or a user's gallery then come back and leave a comment on this blog :#1:

Having a problem?

If something isn't working quite right for you or you find a bug, make sure to report it to the Thumb Enhancements project in the issue tracker and we'll make sure that we fix up any problems as quickly as we can :aww:

Stay devious

I dislike the comment counter, it wasn't needed and it looks tacky.
I like the "galleries at glance" though.

hi :)

very good idea .... :) still from my point of view for good quality of work speaks not only the number of comments but also the number of :+fav: ...

what i mean is: wouldnt be great to add the additional information concerning faving the artwork ?

I really think this update is totally unnecessary...
I mean, what good does it give you to know how many comments a piece has? The only thing that'll be clear is whether it's popular or not.

I think that, while useless updates are being worked on, useful updates should be thougt over, like the practicity that typing "tab -> enter" gives you when commenting AND responding. /really misses that

You're awesome :) I completely agree! The lack of "Tab -> Enter" also give me the shits!!

When I hit tab I don't expect to end up at the top of the page. Implementation of the tab order is actually quite easy! I'm surprised they keep overlooking this?

Well, at least now it doesn't go to the top of the page! XD When you're responding, you press "tab" and the "add comment" button becomes yellow... But you still need to click on it for it to work! XDD

At least when commenting it's ok, right? ;v;

I love the feature of adding the number of comments below each thumbnail; it's an excellent idea and seems to work really well.

I also support adding in the number of views or the number of downloads below a preview thumbnail, but only on the user's gallery page.

Overall, I think that the improvements to dA are great, even in the last few weeks that I've been a registered member.

It is a good addition and I like it :3 I found myself using it regularly already because when logging in on my frontpage I can see if my newest deviation got new comments just by looking a the number of comments XD
I know I could easily check my message centre, but that way I already know what's waiting for me there ^^;

I like the new thumbnails, but also suggested awhile back if you could have amount of views under the thumbnails, since everyone likes to know how many people viewed there art. I have to keep clicking on each thumbnail to see my views, which takes along time, since I have alot of pictures, and art. Hope you take this into account.

This is a nice concept, however I feel it only pushes the whole idea that a piece is good/better if it has more comments. And alot of people here are more inclined to liking fanart because its of their fandom, as opposed to liking it for other reasons.

But I do like the galleries system.

I think there should be a way of knowing whether or not we've already fav'd something when looking at thumbnails. Some folks have so much art you'd need to BE a computer, literally -- to know what you've already fav'd or not. It would be a huge time saver so you don't have to manually pull up each one in full view mode to find this out :)

I like it, but I think there should be an option to turn it on and off and let us decide what info is shown. I particularly like showing what gallery things are in as it's easier to spot if something is placed in the wrong gallery.

The gallery at a glance is fantastic, and I like it very much; but it would be cool if we had the option to see downloads and fav's when mouse over the comment text as bonus info...

Another thing that would be nice, is the possibility to edit your comments, but only for a short period of time, say maximum 10 minutes or something, it can be handy if you discover a typo, or have something to add... So you don't have to comment again, or reply to your own comment :)

Deviantart seems to be pushing "comments." However, how many comments is not nearly as important as say, how many favorites, the date it was added, etc.

I could go comment trolling with a group of comment trolling friends and be all "lul thiz suckz lul gtfo da lawl haha" and the person could be spammed with these and all of us are sitting around clapping and saying "WAY TO GET 400 COMMENTS OF ABUSE YEA!"

Yeah no, take that off. If artists can put "..." in their artist's statements without a little pop up voice box saying "dont forget to put artist statements that actually have meaning!" Then I shouldn't have to be running around posting comments on their profile and seeing how much they get, sorry...

I have to disagree.

Comments (good ones) are more important to me than faves. Ofc you can go trolling around if you're an ass, but who does that help?

..And before you go and say it, yes I'm a shitty artist and I almost never get any faves or comments, so who am I to decide. Clearly I'm wrong.

Clearly you are posting here to promote donations and points be gifted to your donation drive. Your art, your attitude, your foul language, and begging for points seems to be what you are depending on to attract comments. Good luck with that!

Umm... what?
I don't beg for anything o.O

I just implied that a person who is actually famous (such as alexiuss, TomPreston or purplekecleon) has more weight on their opinions. I also gave my opinion on the matter. I don't care about any of that point crap. I have the donation thing on because when I finally make the upgrade for the group I might not need to pay the full amount, because of some kind souls. I guess that's wrong too?

I use foul language if I say "an ass"? I know to be more nice to people who dislike words like that, I should've used 'idiot' or something.

Haha... I'm a busy person, and I do love getting comments and engaging in conversations, but whenever I feel a bite from the conversation bug I go to the forums XD.

And if I ever want some critiques on my work there are many groups and clubs and what not devoted to people communing to do these types of things so it works out for me...

Part 3 - TO DA STAFF and Deviants
My responses in this thread indicate that on its own the new Comments policy is bothersome to me. However, I want give you more perspective as to why I believe that this is an example of how dA seems to be losing sight about it's mission.

As a Super Group Founder (Alphamental-Men) which contains art focusing on the male experience - there are images and galleries that deal with gay bullying, violence against gays, depression, and the It Gets Better program. There are also galleries of male nudes. In October our Group sets up front page Gay Pride galleries.

In December I became aware that some of our Members were being threatened and bullied by a homophobic vigilante group. On the front page of the User/Member who has initiated the group was a large journal post "Putting Gays on Notice" that they were coming to harass them. I sent in a Help Request with all the necessary links to show you that the intimidating threats were not idle. I linked you to the threatening comments actually sent to my Members. I got no help from dA. I sent a second urgent Help Request with additional examples of threatening and extremely abusive comments but still did not get a Response from dA. More than a week later I sent a 3rd Help Request with the above title.

#279641 re #276278 -Please Help! I am feeling that dA has abandoned me!

It is now February 6th and all three of my comments for help show up as: [Awaiting assignment to a help desk operator]. It seems that dA had plenty of resources to create this system of showing the number of comments on everyone's images but you don't have the resources to protect people when those comments are threatening or abusive. Specific comments made by these vigilante homophobes to our Members have the theme: "Your work is garbage -they don't belong here - if you don't remove them we will continue to harass you - move to someplace where you can have homo sex at rest stops - no one wants to see you naked - etc…" It seems that in the quest for Comments, dA seems to encourage this. More comments are a good thing...Right?

If you review some of the behavior of those Members who posted here how they really like this new policy you will see the real 'reason' why many of them like the policy. Many of them are seeking points and donations. Some reply to the people who leave them kind comments by asking them for favors. Some are running online Lotteries and spamming dA Members to gambling Groups which are so sophisticated that they receive and pay out money via Paypal.

Not one person in the more than 35 people I reviewed has any recent history of faving and commenting on someone elses art that had low numbers of comments. However, 100% of their most recent favs and comments went to art that had very high numbers of comments. So far this system is being used exactly the way it would be expected - to find the highest rated art and or target Members for some deviant scam. Several of the most positive comments on this thread seemed to come from dA employees.

p.s. I live in Downtown Los Angeles not far from your offices. If you doubt what I'm saying here I would welcome coming to your office to verify what I've been writing. Please feel free to use my search history regarding my survey to this 'Comments' proposal and see for yourself what I saw.

[Pt 2 of 3] I have spent the past few days analyzing and trying to understand the thinking behind these new beta changes, particularly the one related to publishing the number of comments to the thumbs of an Artists work. After reading every single response in this thread, I randomly selected two consecutive pages and I analyzed the online public browsing behavior of those deviants who submitted comments strongly praising the proposed displaying of comments.

I reviewed only the deviants whose comments contained at least one full sentence and whose reply seemed specifically in praise of the issue of posting the comments count under thumbs. I started at the top of the first random page and reviewed every deviant whose comments met the above criteria. I did this until I gathered useful information from 30 commenters. I will submit my findings in the next day or two. I use OneNote software so I was able to take multiple screen shots that reflect my method and my findings.

2. Perhaps the single most common theme that emerged throughout the thread (coming from the supporters and non-supporters) is the sense of confusion as to why dA felt so strongly about this change, and that in terms of the company time and resources allotted to improve the website experience, that dA felt the issue of posting comments under thumbnails to be a priority. Only one response came close to saying that this change was something they had thought about. The others wondered: Why do this? Can we disable it? Can you use something else instead of Comments -which have no relation to the art?

This single proposed change as small as it seems on the surface is one that signals a new direction for the website. All of your staff is aware that the Comments are the most meaningless method to use to rank an Artist's work. The comments are not critiques. Higher numbers of comments usually signal emoticons and chatter. This proposal encourages more meaningless chatter for the purpose of increasing numbers for the sake of numbers. dA had a reputation of being an Art Gallery worthy of members creating a portfolio to present our Art to clients and independent Galleries to help our careers. What would be a reason for an Artist to show their portfolio of images with personal data such as Comments and Favs written underneath each of their works? Have any of you seen that anywhere else in the art world?

Pt 3 will summarize my findings from paragraphs 1-2 above.
